Who is God?

Atheism - is an explicit position, can be either the affirmation of the nonexistence of god or the rejection of theism. It is also defined more broadly as an absence of belief in deities, or non-theism

  • Psalm 19 – The Heavens declare the Glory of God; and the sky above proclaim His handiwork.
  • Psalm 14:1 – The fool says in his heart there is no God, they are corrupt, they do abomidable deeds, there is no one who does good.
  • Romans 1:20 – His invisible attributes are clearly seen in creation. We don’t have an excuse to deny God.

Theism - is the belief in at least one deity

Monotheism - is the belief that there is only one deity.

Polytheism - is the belief that there is more than one deity

Pantheism - is the view that everything is part of an all-encompassing immanent abstract God

Christianity believes in God consisting in three persons which are God the Father, Jesus the Son, and The Holy Spirit. God reveals himself in three co-equal and co-eternal persons. All three are all of the same substance, separate, but somehow one. Each member of the Trinity has all the attributes that God has such as creator, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotence, sovereignty, personal, Holy, infinite, eternal, immutable, etc. The Trinity is well put by Dr. Robert A. Morey and I quote “God is Spirit in nature, infinite in all His attributes, and incomparable in all that He is; He is God in Three Persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit; our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier; in whose power and wisdom, righteousness, goodness, mercy, and grace we trust”. There are some examples that we try to give as an analogy of what a Trinitarian thing is physically like water, space, and time. We must also realize that God is Incomprehensible. Only God understands God infinitely. If we could fully understand God, then we would know this is a man made religion.

The Attributes of God

What are attributes? Attributes is a characteristic or quality of God’s existence, being or nature. It is something He has revealed to us.

1)  God is the creator -(Genesis 1:1) If you can just accept this then there will be no difficulty in accepting the rest of the Bible. All the other attributes of God modify the creator. They are understandable only in the context of Bara ex-nihilio that is creation out of nothing.

  • Isaiah 64:8 - But now, O Lord, You are our Father, we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand.
  • Psalm 33:6 - By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host.

2) Omniscient - God knows anything about everything only as God can know it. His knowledge is infinite and has no cutting off point or limitations.

  • Psalm 147:5 – Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His Understanding is beyond measure.
  • 1 John 3:20 – For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything. (God knows all things Flat out)!
  • Job 34:21 - For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps.
  • Job 37:16 – Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge. (God is perfect in knowledge)!

3) Omnipresent - God is forever present everywhere at the same time.

  • Psalm 139 – Turn to your Bible for this one. It is such an amazing Psalm.
  • Jeremiah 23:24 - Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?" declares the Lord.
  • 1 Kings 8:27 - But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!

4) Omnipotence - God is all powerful and his power is infinite, eternal, and inexhaustible. Some people ask if God can sin? No! Can God Lie? No! Can God make a rock so big that he cannot lift it? No! God cannot do or be anything which contradicts his Divine nature.

  • 2 Timothy 2:13 – If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.
  • Titus 1:2 - In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ago...
  • Hebrews 6:18 – So that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie...
  • Psalm 62:11 - Once God has spoken, twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God.
  • Jeremiah 32:17,27 - Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You. Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?"

5) Sovereignty - God is in Control!

  • Romans 11:33-36 - Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" "Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
  • God’s Omnipotence = Infinite Potential Power
  • God’s Sovereignty = Infinite Actual Control
  • God’s Sovereignty is his chief attribute because it is Gods Sovereignty that makes the attributes of God work together to accomplish God’s Will. This means we cannot strip God of his Sovereignty without destroying his Deity.
  • Divine Sovereignty Scriptures: Genesis 1:1, Job 42:2, Psalm 103:19, Psalm 115:2-8, Daniel 4:34-35, Proverbs 16:33, 1 Samuel 1:6, Romans 8:28, Romans 11:33-36. Ephesians 1:11, Acts 17:24-28, Revelation 4:11, James 4:13-15, and Colossians 1:16,17

6) God is Holy - Holy, Holy, Holy is the only word in the entire Bible that explains what God is three times in a row.

  • Habakkuk 1:13 - Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, and You can not look on wickedness with favor.
  • Isaiah 6:1-3 - In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim, each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!"
  • 1 Peter 1:15,16 - but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."
  • Revelation 4:8 - "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God, The Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!"

7) God is Righteous, Just, and Love - God is love but he will not let sin go unpunished (2 Peter 3:3-9).

  • Psalm 11:7 - For the LORD is righteous; He loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.
  • Jeremiah 31:3 - the LORD appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued My faithfulness to you.
  • Romans 5:8 - but God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • Ephesians 3:19 - May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
  • Lamentations 3:22 - The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.

8) God is Good - God determines what is good. Things that we may think is bad or evil He may think otherwise. Also God can use bad things for the good as well.

  • Psalm 34:8 - Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
  • Psalm 108:4 - For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
  • Romans 8:28 - And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
  • James 1:2 - Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

9) God is Personal - This is what sets God apart from other false gods. (Acts 17:22-31)

  • Psalm 56:8 – You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
  • Psalm 147:4 – He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names.
  • Matthew 10:30 – But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.
  • John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal  life.

10)  The God of the Bible is the one true God -

  • Deuteronomy 4:35 - To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord, He is God; there is no other besides Him.
  • Isaiah 44:6 - Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me.
  • Jeremiah 10:10 - But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes and the nations cannot endure his indignation.
  • John 17:3 - And this is eternal life that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
  • 1 Corinthians 8:6 - Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

11) The Incomprehensibility of God - Only God understands God infinitely. If wecould fully understand God, then we would know this is a man made religion.

  • 1 Corinthians 2:11 - For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

12) God is Infinite - Infinite in person, power, presence, and perception. Psalm 147 & Isaiah 46:10

  • Time --  Eternal
  • Space -- Omnipresent
  • Knowledge -- Omniscient
  • Power -- Omnipotent
  • Will -- Sovereign
  • Goodness -- Holy

13) The Eternity of God - He is beginning less, Endless, Uncreated, Never Changing, Uncaused, Eternal and Timeless. (Genesis 21:33, Isaiah 40:28, and Romans 16:26). To say that God is eternal is to say that God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in his own being, and he sees all time equally. In all this He sees events in time and act in time.

  • Beginning-less:Genesis 3:14 - He says. “I am that I am,” He’s the eternal one. He always was….
  • Endless:Revelation 22:13 - He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the beginning and the End.
  • Uncreated:1 Timothy 1:17 - To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
  • Never Changing:Malachi 3:16 - For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. (Numbers 23:19 & James 1:17)
  • Timeless: Time is a process (Genesis 4:3, 38:12) which God “sets” (Acts 1:7), “appoints” (Genesis 18:14, Daniel 8:19) and determines (Acts 17:26). Nowhere in the Bible does time control or limit God.
    • Other verses on God is Timeless: Psalm 41:13, Psalm 90:1-4, Psalm 106:48, Isaiah 57:15, Isaiah 43:13

Conclusion

No discussion of the attributes of God can be complete without the “Godhood of God,” which is His divine sovereignty over all things. It is only by His sovereignty over all things that we know that our God is God. This then is the God we love and serve. He is a mighty God! He is a God who is worthy of our worship, a God before whom we should bow down in wonder, awe and praise. To Him belongs all the glory both in this world and the next. So who do you put your trust in? I put my trust in the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, righteous, true, holy, good, personal, infinite, and sovereign God of the universe who is in control and who is watching over us.

Jeremiah 29:13 - You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
